Weeks ago, I was invited to an eighties-themed party, and it nearly drove me insane—because I barely own anything that fits the era. Most of my wardrobe is black, and the expected look was the usual stereotype: neon colors, leg warmers, big hair, and sporty jackets. That’s when I confirmed it: eighties fashion is definitely my least favorite of all the vintage eras.
Honestly, that decade was loud, asymmetrical, and overwhelmingly colorful—none of which aligns with my real-life style or even my preferences on Stardoll. Still, I bought a few pieces to pull together a decent outfit and went to the party.
My surprise? Almost everyone was dressed in regular clothes, and those who did follow the theme wore the stereotypical looks that aren’t even accurate to the era. It made me realize something: when we search for “eighties fashion” online, most of what we find is modern interpretations rather than historically accurate outfits.
After this little adventure, I felt inspired to show what truly accurate eighties fashion looks like—using a few examples recreated on Stardoll. Here are my favourite items that I love from that era:
- Bold accessories: Big earrings, long necklaces and many bracelets were popular at the era, no matter the style, in female fashion was a hit. The earrings were big or chunky and it was combined sometimes with long necklaces or, layers of neckales were worn but small earrings.
- Oversized jackets: This type of jackets were so popular in different styles just to give a formal look. In female fashion was perfect to combine it with pants or skirts of the same cloth.
- Kitten heels: Pointy and short heels were very common to wear in all styles as they give aswell a formal look. Mostly they were of bright colours or neutral, and not exactly as the stereotype shows of neon colours.
- Denim: All denim outfit was a hit during that time, even shoes were made of the same fabric. The fabric is so versatile as it combines with every colour and style. If there was a situation where it's needed to wear something about the era but without spending too much money on that, an option is always this.
- Layering: Layers of clothes or accessories hihglighted in the pop culture, principally in music history fashion, artists like Madonna or Cindy Lauper were the most excentric and popular musicians at the time that brought that kind of fashion. The style itself is not of my favourites, it has some of combinations that I would rescue.
- Post-punk or gothic: Eighties were the most important era of music industry as it was the time were it was a boom of the music genres that we know nowadays. One of my favourite genres of the time was post-punk, where gothic style was very used, it was a mixture of romantic and punk style, where black was mainly used. Makeup was indeed excentric and bold, combined with wild hair and too many accessories.
