OOTD #53

I recently watched Dangerous Liaisons (1988), a drama set in the mid-18th century. I must admit I haven’t read the original novel — I tried, but I tend to get too distracted to finish a full book.

This French-inspired story follows two manipulative “lovers”: Glenn Close as the Marquise de Merteuil and John Malkovich as the Vicomte de Valmont. They become entangled in a dangerous game, where Valmont is challenged to seduce two young women newly introduced to society. As expected in a story driven by ambition and desire, everything unfolds toward their goal — only to collapse in the end. The later adaptation, Cruel Intentions (1999), reimagines the story in a modern setting while preserving its tragic essence.

What I truly adore about the 1988 film is its interpretation of French haute fashion. While not entirely historically precise, it feels beautifully close. The garments, colour palettes, and hairstyles are all stunning. Combined with the refined language, atmospheric settings, and remarkable performances, the film becomes visually unforgettable.

Inspired by this, I created an outfit that captures that elegance, reinterpreted with my own aesthetic and a darker, more contemporary touch.
